How to Brighten Your Garden This Winter With Flowers

Just because it’s the season of rain, wind and snow doesn’t mean you have to have a dull and depressing garden. Yes, the winter weather can wreak havoc on your garden, but there are ways you can brighten it up considerably. Today, we’re going to be talking about how you can brighten your garden this winter with flowers, so read on and find out more!

Winter flowers really do brighten up the garden with beautiful colours

You might be surprised to know that winter is a great time to plant some winter flowers. Flowers in winter will really give your garden a happy lift that will carry it through till spring comes. By picking the right ones you could be filling your house with your own beautiful flowers too.

Winter flowers include irises which flower in spring, crocuses and of course those winter favourites, snowdrops. You can plant some outside, and also place a few in some handy containers and allow them to flower indoors, so you can enjoy them as spring approaches. For those you plant outdoors, plant them in shadier areas as they will do better that way.

Heather is another beautiful winter flower, it looks great in both flower pots indoors as well as outside. Heather has some fantastic colours including purple, pink and white.

Perennials

It is possible to plant some perennials around the festive season and you won’t regret it because they have such delicate and beautiful petals. There are lots of different types, so choose the colour you like the best. Hellebores are lovely, but like the shade, they have an enormous number of flowers in winter, less so in summer.

Violas are small, but flower throughout the season. Outside you can use them to fill gaps in your borders and inside, if you save some in pots, you’ll have a gorgeous array of flowers for the home.

We mentioned crocuses earlier and they are quite the beautiful flower. They blossom in autumn or winter weather and they will certainly brighten up your garden this winter. They don’t like rain, so plan them underneath some trees if you have any so the rain doesn’t spoil them.

Other beautiful flowers that flourish in winter are Japanese quince, winter aconites, cyclamen and viburnum. They really do add a certain something to your garden and will certainly stop it from looking drab and grey as some gardens look at this time of year.
