How to look after your grass this winter

So, winter is upon is, the wind and rain and the colder temperatures approach. But what can we do about this inclement time of year with regards to our grass lawns? There are things we can do even in winter, to make sure our grass lawns are cared for and healthy enough for the spring months, when it’ll be warm enough to go outside again.

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean your grass wills top growing, just that it will slow down but grow quickly again once the temperature goes up. If your lawn sees some sunshine during the winter months and the ground isn’t frozen, then you can use this perfect opportunity to mow your lawn and take off a small percentage of the top grass. This will help stimulate growth and help it stay healthy.

No to Scarification, Yes to Mowing

It won’t be necessary to scarify your lawn at this time of year because the grass won’t recover once you’ve carried out the scarification process in winter. But mowing is a good idea because if you don’t take advantage of dry spells in the way that we’ve described, then your grass could potentially become diseased and much thinner and unhealthy.

Fertilise

It’s also a good idea to fertilise in early winter before the frost comes. The fertiliser will remain within the soil and help feed the roots throughout winter. When Spring comes, you’ll have a lush, healthy grass lawn that’s had an opportunity to feed on fertilizer nutrients beneath the frost.

Don’t Walk on a Frozen Lawn

To help your lawn through winter try not to walk on it when it’s hard and frosty, and make sure leaves have all been cleared away. Get to grips with any worm casts, and on mild days trim the edges as well as the centre of the lawn, unless it’s frozen. Don’t worry too much about removing snow from the lawns, leave it as it is. When the it’s milder apply a spring feed/tonic to help it get over the cold winter once spring is closer.
