The Best Climbing Plants for your Garden Fencing

Are you thinking of getting some climbing plants for your garden fencing? If you’re sitting on the patio facing the garden fence you might be sick of the sight of it. An expanse of plain wood isn’t a great view; however, a few climbing plants can transform a boring fence into an interesting one, giving you something to admire and enjoy the next time you sit outside.

Climbing plants aren’t hard to look after and take little time in establishing themselves on your garden fencing. Of course, a lot of this will depend on the type of climbers you choose, so you need to choose well, and take your time. Don’t rush to buy, focus on the different types, how much maintenance you think they might need and whether the conditions in your garden are sufficient for the type of climber you’ve chosen.

Rather than provide you with an exhaustive list of climbers, we’ll just go through the different types of climbing plants there are and it’ll give you a good idea of which types are best.

Tendrils

This type of climber will wrap itself around your garden fencing and then hoist itself higher. Sweet peas are one example, and there are many more. You will need to keep on top of them as they can easily get out of control, they have a tendency to wrap themselves around other plants as well as themselves creating a lumpy foliage that’s hard to unravel.

Twining Climbing Plants

This type of climbing plant will grab on to your garden fencing using its stems. They often need help to start their climb and once they’ve started to grow they won’t need much attention. There are different families of twining climbers such as morning glory, milkweed and the pea family. The devices they use to attach their stems can vary from coarse hairs, thorns or protuberances. Examples of twining plants are clematis and honeysuckle.

Aerial Roots

This type of climber will cling on to your garden fencing by its roots. Strawberries and spider plants are two examples of this type of climber. The roots come from the stem and not from the ground, ivy is another good example.
