Garden Maintenance This Autumn
It’s time to start thinking about your garden as autumn approaches. We’re here to help you with garden maintenance with some hints and tips we hope you’ll find useful. As the weather turns colder, gradually over the coming weeks, you want to make sure your garden is prepared. But how?
Changes in Weather
There will be a drop-in temperature, it won’t happen overnight, but over the coming weeks and months. It’ll be wetter too unfortunately, and your garden needs to be prepared for these changes. There’ll be less mowing involved soon, so that will be less work, although it might be a good idea to finish off gradually and raise the cut on your lawn mower, making sure the blades are sharp.
Lawn Treatment
Treat your lawn with the kind of things that will help it stay lush and survive the winter. Weed killer will help keep weeds away but naturally, you’ll need to make sure it’s animal friendly if you have pets. Moss killer is another great idea if your garden suffers with it.
Scarify
You can also use a process known as scarification. Scarifying your lawn involves removing the roots, dead grass and any other debris with a rake, or you can invest in an electrical scarifier. Why not use a lawn vacuum to remove more debris and dead leaves? This can be hired from a good DIY store or garden store, much in the same way as a scarifier. The lawn vacuum will suck up leaves, twigs and debris, and once finished you can dispose of the contents quickly and easily, which is better than having to pick it all up by hand.
Feed Your Lawn
Use lawn feed and it’ll keep your grass healthy and help it to keep its lush green colour. You can also plant some lawn seed in areas where it may have starting balding during the warmer weather, and over the autumn and winter months it will start to grow back.
Aerate
You can also aerate your lawn, this will involve spiking all over the lawn with a garden fork so the lawn will drain better and offer a relief for compaction. More air will get into the roots and your lawn will be healthier as a result.
Cut-Back
You can also cut back on shrubs, plants and trees so your lawn has better access to water and necessary nutrients. If you’re worried about worms this autumn don’t because worms really help improve the nutrients in your soil. Therefore, place some worm casts and leave them there until they dry. Brush them away once they’ve dried and hopefully your soil will be richer and your lawn healthier as a result.
