Looking After Your Garden Lawn During Winter

When winter comes it's important to make sure you take good care of your garden. It's at this crucial time of the year when your garden will need a lot of attention so it survives the winter months. What can we do to make sure our gardens get through the harsh winter weather?

If you don't take care of it during winter, then it's not going to be there for you in spring. If you follow some of the advice given here, you should have a lively looking garden lawn later in the year, and that has to be something worth looking forward to!

Freezing Weather Can Harm Your Lawn

When we have wet and then freezing weather, it can have a detrimental effect on your lawn. If you can, avoid walking on the grass after it's been freezing as the grass could break off and not really repair itself until the spring. Grass does grow during the winter months, although it does slow down considerably, but if damaged, it may take time to recover.

It's also important to clear away any dead leaves off the lawn so the grass isn't smothered by it throughout the cold weather.

Thinking of Mowing?

If you are going to mow your lawn, you should really do it before the winter sets in, as this will help stimulate the grass to grow, however slowly over the winter months. It's best that you trim the edges of your lawn before winter sets in.

Do remove snow from your lawn, the grass should be fine underneath, but there could be evidence of some mould or what's known as Fusarium Disease once the snow has melted.

Aerate the lawn with a fork if you can, as this will improve drainage and remove compaction allowing more air into the roots.

Worms are Good For Your Lawn

Sweep away any worm casts but remember that worms can be good for a lawn helping the soil's nutrient content. So just sweep away the worm casts when they're dry.

Poor drainage can result in algae, and another thing to look out for is foot traffic during wet weather, which can damage the lawn, so creating a path with stepping stones perhaps, is one way of alleviating this.

Take Note and Take Action

If you take note of the above advice and keep an eye out for your lawn during those hard winter months, then you should have a fighting chance of having a healthy lawn come spring. It just takes a few minutes each day to keep an eye out for anything and to clear away any snow or leaves, leaving your lawn in pristine condition come the warmer months.
