Your Guide to Garden Walling

A stone wall may be something you've walked past, touched, climbed over even and never really noticed But once you own your own property then all the details are there to be savoured and noted. You have a garden, what do you see? Perhaps your garden is looking a tad dull, and if this is the case, then adding garden walling may create interesting space, an area to sit in or a place to grow flowers or vegetables.

Different Types of Stone and Different Designs

The interesting thing about a stone wall is the different types of stone you can use to make it. A different mix of stone from different areas can make for a really interesting wall that can transform your outdoor area and add something really unique to your property. And that's as well as adding value should you decide to sell.

Versatility and Functionality

You can construct your wall and make it anyway you want, naturally you'll want something that's reasonably resistant to weather and to the penetration of water – especially in the UK! Certain types of granite and limestone are good for this, and although it may take you a while and a lot of hard work, a stone garden wall will be really worth it in the end. Of course if you change your mind, you can simply edge the flower bed or vegetable garden with it.

Feel Confident Enough to Build it Yourself?

You have two options after you've decided on having garden walling and bought the materials. You can either build it yourself or you can hire a builder. If you feel you have the necessary skills, then why not? Keep in mind however, that great workmanship and meticulous attention to detail is what will lead to a great wall, and help improve the appearance of your property. Sloppy work, and you'll wind up spending more money, and even having to pay someone else to rectify it.

Health and Safety First

There are many different designs you can choose from for your garden walling and an experienced landscaper will know how to avoid injuries and take good health and safety precautions. If you're building it yourself, remember to make sure you kit yourself out with the right clothes first, boots with steel toes, leather gloves and adequate eye gear.

Garden Walling: Affordable, Versatile & Durable

Remember stone garden walling is going to last a lifetime and offer you shelter from the elements, as well as privacy from the outside world. Using stone wall will blend in beautifully with the environment and it's incredibly durable. Stone will also give you variety along with colour, shape and size. Maintaining it will be a cinch, because stone walling requires very little in the way of maintenance. Stone is also extremely affordable so your garden walling isn't going to break the bank.

Don't Want Stone Walling?

There are other materials to consider if you're not over keen on the idea of stone. Masonary blocks are one option. Masonary blocks are construction blocks which can stack up nicely and are filled with concrete. Once your wall is finished you'll find that its strength will offer a long lifetime.

Bricks are another option and aesthetically, it's an attractive option. It's a long repetitive job, but worthwhile if you're set on a red brick wall. This type of garden walling is great for small gardens and can look very stylish for smaller properties, such as semi-detached or terraced.
