Decking or Patio, What's Best For You?
You're looking to make changes to your garden and you'd like something special. You think that a patio, or perhaps even decking might be a great new way of freshening up your garden. It is something to consider, and the idea of having a garden that's great for entertaining guests and for sitting out in during the summer, is enough to give you the motivation to do something. The problem is you're unsure about which is best – patio or decking?
In this post we're going to be taking a look at fencing and decking, the differences, and which one you think might be best for you.
There are some differences between decking and patio even though people often use both to more or less describe the same thing.
Patio
A patio is an outdoor space that is on the ground often with concrete bases. Some use tile, stone or brick. They don't have a rail and they can be open or covered. They sometimes come with built in barbecues and sitting areas for entertaining.
Decking
Decking is made from wood or vinyl. They are not on the ground but slightly raised and usually come with a support system that holds the whole thing up. They can be built off the living room or the kitchen and can sometimes be part of a rooftop setting. They usually come with a railing to close them off and they often give beautiful views of the landscape.
Patio - Benefits and Disadvantages
Patios are easy to take care of and maintain and come in a variety of different shapes, colours and textures so it could be a real talking point of your garden. They look good with almost any kind of property and they can last a long time.
They do need a lot of work beneath before they can be built successfully and it can depend on the type of ground you have in your garden where in some cases, reinforcements may be needed.
Decking – Benefits and Disadvantages
Decking is easier to construct and even easier if it's above ground level, which they usually are. They use natural material e.g. timber and they can work out quite economically, depending on the type of wood used.
They do require a certain degree of maintenance to keep the wood in good condition and they don't always last as long, depending on the wood used. If you use a softwood it should be treated, as otherwise it won't last very long. It can also be quite slippery to walk on in winter, so you need to be careful if you walk on it during the rainy season.
