Any kind of material is good for random layouts, but sandstone or simple inexpensive paving slabs will do just as well.

A herringbone pattern is a more traditional pattern and unlike a random design, herringbone will use pretty uniform slabs in size, usually rectangular. It’s a stylish formal look, one which is copied and used in kitchens and living rooms indoors.
