Low maintenance garden design ideas

Garden design doesn’t have to be hard and we’re all for making things easier, so we’ve created this post on low maintenance garden design ideas.

Remove your lawn

If you want it really low maintenance you’re going to need less greenery and perhaps even less plants or even less lawn. It will certainly lower your workload and give you less to do. By removing the lawn, you’ll rid yourself of weekly and biweekly cutting. Instead, you could gravel, pave or deck your lawn. You could create a small square with a limited amount of lawn, and perhaps even replace the lawn with artificial grass, that will certainly cut down on mowing altogether. Our team of landscape gardeners in West Lothian can help.

Keep your garden tidy

It only takes a little brushing and raking every now and again, and you’ll create less work in the long run. If you leave it indefinitely, you’ll end up with one big job once it gets too much and looks a real mess, so don’t let it reach that point.

Seating and potted plants

Preferably where you’ll catch the sun and give yourself some shade for when it’s at its hottest with an awning, gazebo or parasol. You can have a few modest potted plants if gardening isn’t your thing, just don’t create anything that’ll be hard work to maintain.

Low maintenance plants

Naturally, there are certain plants you’ll want to avoid if you don’t want the hard work of maintaining them. These are usually plants such as annuals, bedding plants, and staking plants, or plants which are like cat nip to rabbits, slugs and other insects. Also, stay away from climbers as they will need a lot of work or they can really get out of control, and at some point, will need tying up or they’ll be climbing every which way they can. Of course ones where the seeds need sowing are going to give you more work, so no vegetables.

Shrubbery

You could think about evergreen shrubs such as lavender, holly and daphne. And as well as the gazebos, awnings and parasols we mentioned earlier, you could also try arches and pergolas as these would not only provide a certain degree of shelter in the garden, they also look really good. They can transform parts of the garden, and they don’t have to cost a fortune.

Garden accessories

Find unique accessories for the garden, look in vintage stores and garden centres, try to find something that was originally made for something else and use it in the garden for your plants. You could have a theme that’s matched with both accessories and garden furniture. You could also think about using agricultural accessories such as feeders, troughs even, and fill them with plants.
