Grass maintenance tips

We're looking at grass maintenance, so you can keep your lawn turf in beautiful condition all year round. It’s especially important now to start thinking about lawn maintenance because spring is on its way, and you want to have your garden ready and willing to welcome in the warmer months.

Clear Your Lawn

Firstly, don’t leave your garden in a mess, before you do anything clear away any debris lying around. If you’re going to try mowing the lawn, you don’t want to end up damaging anything belonging to the kids or the pets, and you don’t want to break your mower on branches and any other sharp objects which may have blown in to your garden over the past few months.

Those mower blades can be dangerous

Keep in mind that lawn mowers use blades and if they do hit something this could end up going in your face or someone else’s, or passers-by, and it can also irreparably damage your mower forcing you to invest in a new one.

Check your mower thoroughly

If you’ve not used your mower in a while, check it to see that it’s in good working condition first. Is anything loose? Is the engine working properly if your mower is motorised? And how are the fuel and oil levels? If the blades on your mower are dull you can take steps to sharpen them, but be careful you don’t hurt yourself, wear something protect your hands while you’re doing it.

Newly laid lawn by any chance?

If you’ve just laid down new turf in preparation for the coming spring and the warmer weather, wait for a couple of weeks for the turf to settle before you start mowing it. It takes time for it to root, so it’s important it’s given time to settle, and with no one walking on it either. The rectangular panels of the newly laid turf can shrink if you disturb it too soon. A new lawn should be watered once a day every day for a period of 2 weeks and not cut for 2 to 3 weeks.

Feed your lawn

Once the sun comes out you should soon see your lawn looking healthy and green, and you can always add a lawn feed if it’s looking a little sorry for itself. If your lawn (if it’s a current lawn and not a newly laid one) is looking a little under the weather with a few bald patches, you can get some grass feed on to it.
