Getting your garden ready for Spring

It might be difficult to believe but spring is on its way. You may have noticed the tantalising sight of daffodils shooting up through the grass or a tentative glimpse of snowdrops. The days are slowly growing longer, and it won’t be long before the temperature rises. It’s probably a good idea to prepare your garden for spring, so why not start with essential garden maintenance.

Clean your tools

Make sure you clean all of your tools before using them. Check for repairs and throw out anything that’s beyond help, keeping what needs a simple tweak and a five minute repair job. Wash your tools in simple soap and water, and you should aim to do this at least once a year.

Rake soil and remove stubborn weeds

Turn the soil with a pitchfork or a rake, and this should help get rid of any stubborn weeds. You can also add some compost if you wish, and if you already have some that’s great, but if not, don’t be too worried as you can always buy fresh from a gardening store.

Trim and cut back

You may want to trim your flowers and plants making room for new ones by cutting dead ones away. Perhaps you want to plant more flowers and plants and if so, plan it out first. See if you can get some recommendations from our team of landscape gardeners in West Lothian or consult, your local garden centre. Think about height and placement, considering whether some plants or flowers may be too tall and drown out the smaller ones and whether you want annuals and perennials together – not an altogether bad idea.

Tidying up is essential after Winter

Hopefully you’ll have tidied up your garden, and it will have been one of the first things you did. You’ll need to clear away all of the debris left over from winter removing broken furniture, branches and clearing away any other rubbish as well as leaves and old flower heads. It’s important you try to get this done as soon as possible, because new flowers and plants will be popping up through the ground, and you don’t want to make gardening hard for yourself. Therefore, the sooner you clear the ground and clear the way, the better it is for the new plants with less opportunity for them to be damaged.
